1,000 village clinics are about to get an AI helper — and the nurses stay in charge
Rwanda will pilot Horizon 1000, a $50 million partnership with OpenAI and the Gates Foundation, to bring practical AI tools into 1,000 primary health care clinics by 2028 — starting at home before spreading across Africa. The tools help overstretched nurses navigate treatment guidelines, cut paperwork and triage patients, with support in local languages. OpenAI's Sam Altman said success will be measured not by tech milestones but by better care for patients and for the health workers themselves.
The upbeat factorhope: AI designed to help village clinics, with the nurses firmly in charge.
