100 years old, living on a pension — and still feeding the neighborhood's hungry kids

Tinkie Windvoël — ‘Ouma’ to everyone who knows her — has turned 100 in Philippi, South Africa, surrounded by four generations of family. Born September 6, 1926, in the Karoo, she is the mother of 13 children and grandmother of 29, has never smoked or drunk alcohol, and just enjoyed her first-ever birthday party, thrown by her local church. She lives on only her pension in an informal settlement — yet the hungry children who knock on her door never leave empty-handed. ‘I find joy in helping other people's children, even when I have little for myself.’

The upbeat factora century of life, and her greatest joy is still giving away what little she has.
