12,000 koalas are about to get a national park of their own
New South Wales is on the verge of creating the Great Koala National Park. The law behind it cleared the state's lower house yesterday and is expected to pass the upper house today, adding more than 178,000 hectares of forest to the national park estate. That protected home would shelter an estimated 12,000 koalas, 36,000 gliders and more than 100 threatened species. The conservation groups who campaigned for the park for years — WWF-Australia, the Nature Conservation Council NSW and the Wilderness Society — are gathering outside the NSW Parliament in Sydney to mark what they call a historic moment for koalas.
