141 rooftops, one village, no power bills from the grid: Khaira goes fully solar

Every rooftop in Khaira village, in Chhattisgarh's Rajnandgaon district, now carries a 2-kilowatt solar panel — 141 households, 282 kilowatts in total — making Khaira the state's first fully solar-powered village. The milestone anchored Chhattisgarh's pitch at the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit & Expo (BRESE) 2026, where Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai set out a target of 15,000 megawatts of green capacity by 2030, up from 3,000 megawatts today. The state says about 1.26 lakh (126,000) rooftop solar units are already installed under the national rooftop scheme, 1.66 lakh (166,000) solar pumps irrigate nearly 1.94 lakh (194,000) hectares, and a 40-megawatt solar plant paired with battery storage is already running in Rajnandgaon. Investment opportunities worth ₹5.60 lakh crore (5.6 trillion rupees, about $59 billion) over five years were showcased at the summit.
