20,000 native trees planted on fire-scarred Mallorca win a global gold award
The TUI Forest project on Mallorca has planted more than 20,000 native trees and shrubs on land repeatedly damaged by wildfires — and has now won gold for climate adaptation at the Global Responsible Tourism Awards in London. The project, run by the Balearic Government and the TUI Care Foundation with more than €1 million (about $1.2 million) in funding, aims to restore over 200 hectares and plant 40,000 plants by 2028, all grown from local seed in the island's own nursery.
The upbeat factorground that kept burning is turning green again, planted with the island's own seeds.
