200 blocked shots, one future service dog: Washington's defence just funded a veteran's new partner

Every shot a Washington Capitals player blocks now does double duty. Through the Good Dogs for Great Americans programme, CACI donates $250 per blocked shot to America's VetDogs — and during Thursday's game against Nashville, defenceman Matt Roy's block, the team's 200th of the season, pushed the total to $50,000: enough to fully fund raising, training and placing the programme's first service dog with a veteran. Team leader Martin Fehérváry has contributed 32 blocks of his own. The dog at the end of this story will give one veteran greater independence and a partner at their side every day.

The upbeat factorthe least glamorous play in hockey — throwing your body in front of a puck — just bought a veteran a life-changing companion.
