22 triathlons in 24 hours: Ethan Hunger raced through the night to a world record — and past $500,000 for his food bank

Ethan Hunger had a simple message before he started: 'No matter how hard a day I create for myself, it will never parallel the struggles of food insecurity.' Then he created a very hard day — 22 super-sprint triathlons in 24 hours in Bellingham, Washington, beating the previous Guinness World Record of 18. Along the way he swam 5.47 miles, cycled 136.7 miles and ran 34.2 miles, cheered by strangers who volunteered through the night as official witnesses. It was year six of his 'Hunger vs. Hunger' fundraiser, which has now raised $1.2 million in total — and this year's effort passed its $500,000 goal, roughly 7% of the Bellingham Food Bank's annual budget. The food bank helps feed almost 5,000 families every week.

The upbeat factora world record that was never really about the record — it was about 5,000 families eating.
