230 new shelters stand in Somalia, and 2,300 Philippine families are rebuilding — preparedness paid off
ShelterBox's October round-up is a study in what readiness looks like. In Somalia, 230 shelters are now complete and families are moving into safer homes — and because the project came in efficiently, future shelters will get corrugated-iron roofs, cooler under harsh sun and tougher in high winds. In the Philippines, more than 2,300 families hit by June's earthquake have received shelter support, cash assistance and household essentials — delivered fast because aid was already prepositioned in Cebu and local partnerships were already in place when the ground shook. And in Mozambique, residents are being trained in shelter-repair techniques themselves, so the next repair doesn't wait for a convoy. Disaster relief is usually photographed at the moment of loss; this is the quieter arithmetic of the months after — roofs up, families home, skills left behind.
