232 wild animals rescued from Borneo's fires, including a hungry orangutan named Ira
As fires burned across parts of Borneo, rescue teams in Central Kalimantan spotted a female orangutan, about 20 years old, searching a scorched forest for food. Ira was gently captured, checked by vets from Orangutan Foundation International, and found uninjured — hungry, but whole. She is one of 232 wild animals Indonesia's teams had rescued by early October, among them 71 orangutans and 76 proboscis monkeys, each one carried out of harm's way by people who refused to leave them behind.
The upbeat factorin a burned forest, 232 second chances — carried out one animal at a time.
