28.10 miles on Mars: Perseverance just out-drove every rover before it
A rover alone on Mars has quietly set a record no vehicle on another world has matched. Perseverance reached 28.10 miles (45.22 kilometres) on October 11, its 2,006th Martian day, edging past the 28.06-mile mark Opportunity took nearly 15 years to set — Perseverance did it in about five and a half. Much of the credit goes to its self-driving system, which steers around hazards on its own and has guided more than 90% of the journey, letting the rover cover far more ground each day than its predecessors could.
The upbeat factora self-driving explorer on Mars just beat a 15-year record in less than half the time.
