3,700 heroes in running shoes: Hanover raises $1 million for children's care, again

For the second straight year, the CHaD HERO in Hanover, New Hampshire, has raised more than $1 million for Dartmouth Health Children's — 3,700 runners, walkers, volunteers and donors filling the Dartmouth Green on Sunday. Over 21 years the event has raised more than $12.6 million, and its promise is absolute: no family is ever turned away for inability to pay. This year's celebration had a bonus — the recent $30 million gift from entrepreneur Tom Golisano, which will build new neonatal and critical-care facilities and rename the hospital Golisano Children's Hospital at Dartmouth Health.

The upbeat factora small town's annual habit of showing up has quietly become $12.6 million of care for other people's children.
