4,152 adoptions in one year: Richmond's shelter just had its biggest year since 2002

The Richmond SPCA in Virginia has placed 4,152 homeless pets into new homes in a single fiscal year — the most since it moved into its humane centre in 2002. Behind the number is a relay of people: an intake team that welcomed 4,300 new pets over the year, veterinary staff, trainers, foster families who open spare rooms to frightened animals, and volunteers by the hundred. Every adoption does double duty — a home for one animal, and an empty kennel that becomes a chance for the next. The shelter, no-kill since 2002, counts 81,625 lives saved across those years. And the work is not finished: nearly 100 pets are still waiting at the adoption centre to meet their families. 'Today we're celebrating a record-breaking year,' the team wrote. 'And tomorrow, we get back to work.'
