400 runs, 517 balls: a marathon innings joins Ranji Trophy history
Chinmay Suthar batted, and batted, and batted. Playing for Mizoram against Nagaland in India's Ranji Trophy, the batter scored 400 runs from 517 balls, with 46 fours and 7 sixes, as his side reached 581 for 9. He becomes only the second batter ever to score 400 in the Ranji Trophy, India's storied first-class championship, and joins a tiny club across all first-class cricket whose members include Brian Lara and Don Bradman. A quadruple century is less a sprint than an act of endurance — concentration held across hours and sessions, one ball at a time, 400 times over.
The upbeat factorfour hundred runs of pure staying power — an innings measured in days, not moments.
