45.2 kilometres on Mars: Perseverance now holds the off-world driving record
Five and a half years after landing in an ancient lakebed, NASA's Perseverance rover has rolled 45.2 km (28.1 miles) across Mars — farther than any vehicle has ever driven on another world, passing the mark set by the Opportunity rover. Project manager Steven Lee of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory says the car-sized explorer's systems are in excellent shape and could keep working well into the 2030s, still hunting for signs that Mars was once warm, wet and alive.
The upbeat factora robot we built is out-driving every explorer before it, on a planet no human has touched.
