51,258 people, one screen: Nollywood sets the Guinness record for the biggest film screening ever

On September 26, the Nigerian crime thriller Black Market drew 51,258 people who stayed from the opening frame to the final credits at Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos — a Guinness World Records mark for the largest attendance at a single-location film screening, beating the previous record of 43,624 set in the Philippines in 2015. The record holders: Damilola Osikoya, Switch Visual Limited, Nora Awolowo and Rixel Studios. Tickets ran from ₦2,000 (about $1.50) to a ₦50,000 (about $38) premium tier. 'This proves that African cinema can dream at scale,' said Nora Awolowo.
