600 megawatts of desert sunshine: Andhra Pradesh switches on a giant solar plant
Across 2,400 acres in Kurnool, one of India's sunniest districts, 600 megawatts of new solar power have just come alive. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu commissioned the SAEL facility on Tuesday, calling it proof the state has reclaimed its place as a clean-energy powerhouse — and noting that the electricity will flow beyond state lines to other parts of India. The groundwork was laid years ago: after 2014, the state identified Kurnool and Anantapur, blessed with some of the country's highest solar irradiance, as anchors of a utility-scale solar belt, designated land and structured incentives for developers. The new plant is among the largest fruits of that long strategy.
