61,146 finishers: New York's marathon becomes the largest in history — again

Some records are about speed. This one is about showing up. The 2026 TCS New York City Marathon, run on Sunday through all five boroughs, drew 61,146 finishers — breaking the world record for the largest marathon ever for the third year in a row, in the 50th year of the five-borough course. Organisers New York Road Runners also smashed their charity target, passing $100 million raised around the race. Among the finishers: Britain's William Goodge, who set a record as the fastest person to run a marathon in all 50 US states — 50 marathons in 23 days — while raising money for Stand Up To Cancer. Tens of thousands of personal finish lines, one shared morning.
