61 Ghanaian students get their university places funded by a chief imam's education fund

In Wa, in Ghana's Upper West Region, 61 tertiary students have had their studies backed this academic year by the Regional Chief Imam's Education Fund — GH¢138,536 (about $12,000) in support, up from 44 students last year. Announcing the 2026/27 awards, Dr Saeed Moomin described a fund built for exactly this: established in October 2022 so that promising students from the region are not turned away from lecture halls by fees. The growth is the story — a community fund, fed locally, reaching a third more students in a year, each one a family whose plans for a degree survived contact with the bill. For the 61, the new term starts with the fees question answered.

The upbeat factora community fund that grew from 44 students to 61 — because a region decided its students finish what they start.
