650 grandparents, one island-wide thank-you: a Korean county honors its elders for the 30th year

In Jindo County, at South Korea's southwestern tip, honoring the elderly isn't a gesture — it's a 30-year tradition. On Friday some 650 seniors gathered across two welfare centers for Senior Citizens' Day: performances, experience booths, awards from Mayor Lee Jae-gak to the people who care for the old, and lunch for everyone. 'We will implement more careful elderly welfare policies to ensure that seniors can enjoy a healthy and happy retirement,' the mayor promised. The celebrations continue across seven towns through November 6 as part of Senior Citizens' Month. Six hundred and fifty grandparents, one island-wide thank-you.

The upbeat factorgratitude ritualized — a whole county pausing to say 'you built this' to its oldest, 30 years running.
