653 endangered frogs just went home to California's mountain streams
This summer, US Geological Survey teams released 653 southern mountain yellow-legged frogs back into their native California habitat — the largest release yet for this endangered species, bringing the year's total past 1,000. Each frog raised and released is a small bet that a species pushed to the edge by disease and drought can once again sustain itself in the wild.
The upbeat factora chorus that nearly went silent is getting its voice back, 653 frogs at a time.
