653 more chances to hear them sing: endangered mountain frogs go home
High in California's San Gabriel, San Bernardino and San Jacinto mountains, about 653 southern mountain yellow-legged frogs have just been released into the streams they belong to — the latest and largest chapter in a long rescue. Of them, 394 were raised at the Aquarium of the Pacific, which took in tadpoles bred at the Los Angeles Zoo and reared them for one to two years until they were ready for the wild; this release brings the Aquarium's total contribution to 1,032 frogs. The Aquarium joined the effort after the 2020 Bobcat Fire burned much of the species' remaining habitat. 'This milestone is a reflection of the incredible support we've received,' said Erin Lundy, the Aquarium's senior manager of conservation initiatives, thanking the partners — including the US Geological Survey — who carried the frogs home.
