68 foundations, ahead of schedule: Germany's largest offshore wind farm takes shape

Eighty-five kilometres north of the island of Borkum, in the German North Sea, the last of 68 foundations for the Nordlicht I offshore wind farm has been installed — ahead of schedule. When complete, its 980 megawatts will make it Germany's largest individual offshore wind farm. The foundations were manufactured by EEW Special Pipe Constructions and CS WIND Offshore and installed by DEME for Swedish utility Vattenfall. First electricity from the wider Nordlicht cluster is expected in 2028, with full commissioning in 2029 — a long build, now past one of its hardest milestones: standing 68 steel foundations in open sea.

The upbeat factorthe hardest part of an offshore wind farm is the part nobody sees — and it is done, early.
