692 gigawatts in a single year: the world's renewable surge, made visible
Here is the energy transition at full size. The International Renewable Energy Agency recorded a 692 gigawatt increase in renewable power capacity in 2025 — a rise of 15.5% that took the world total to 5,149 gigawatts. Solar did most of the lifting with 511 gigawatts of the additions; wind added 159. Renewables supplied 85.6% of all new power capacity added anywhere on Earth last year, and now make up just under half — 49.4% — of all installed electricity capacity. Asia added 513.3 gigawatts of the increase and Africa 11.3 gigawatts: a global record, honestly uneven — and still rising.
The upbeat factorin one year, humanity added more clean power than most countries have in total — and solar carried three-quarters of it.
