77,614 Delhi households sign up for rooftop solar in three weeks — a third of the city's target

Delhi's rooftops are turning into a sign-up success. In just over three weeks since the city's rooftop solar portal opened on September 21, 77,614 households have registered — already past a third of the target of 2.3 lakh (230,000) home systems by next March, officials said. Before the scheme, the city's two big power distributors had managed 29,718 rooftop connections in total. What changed is the price: central help of up to Rs 78,000 (about $820) plus the same again from Delhi takes support to Rs 1.56 lakh (156,000) (about $1,640), making a home system almost free for qualifying families, and families can sell surplus power back. Officials said interest from rural areas and informal colonies was especially strong. The honest next test is turning registrations into panels on roofs — but the queue of willing households is now very real.

The upbeat factormake solar nearly free, and a megacity's families line up in their tens of thousands.
