8,572 seed balls, 422 students: a Punjab university's green homework wins a national platinum award

Students at Lovely Professional University in Punjab got their hands dirty for the planet: they made 8,572 seed balls — little clay-and-compost parcels, each holding a tree seed — using 11 species, nearly nine in ten of them native trees like karanj, shisham, and jamun. The balls were scattered across five mapped sites in the Kapurthala, Amritsar, and Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar districts, where rain can wake the seeds into saplings. The effort earned the Platinum Green Impact Award 2026 from the National EduTrust of India, in a nationwide campaign where about 350 institutions together prepared more than 10 lakh (1,000,000) seed balls and dispersed about 8 lakh (800,000) of them.
