$80 million for mothers and newborns: Kenya's plan could reach 5.9 million women and babies

At Afya House in Nairobi, Kenya's Principal Secretary for Medical Services, Dr. Ouma Oluga, sat down with the Beginnings Fund to lock in an $80 million, five-year investment aimed squarely at preventable deaths of mothers and newborns. The plan, designed with the Kenyan government, covers 21 high-burden counties and 200 priority health facilities — funding emergency obstetric and newborn care, essential supplies and better training and support for health workers. By 2030 it is expected to reach 5.9 million mothers and newborns and prevent an estimated 46,494 maternal and newborn deaths and stillbirths.

The upbeat factora plan measured not in dollars but in mothers who come home — nearly 46,500 deaths it aims to prevent.
