A 600-year-old tomb in Peru, opened for the first time — 'like a treasure chest'
Archaeologists in Chan Chan stepped into a Chimu kingdom mausoleum that no looter had ever touched. Inside: the remains of 38 people, gold, copper and shell artifacts, 60 ceramics, and skulls dusted with red cinnabar — the sacred pigment reserved for elite funerals. "We have never dreamed to find anything like this in Chan Chan," said explorer Gabriel Prieto. Everything known about Chimu elite tombs until now came from looted, ruined sites.
