A basketball game for polio: Somalia rallies a whole country to vaccinate every child

In Mogadishu, they raised awareness for polio the Somali way — with a women's national basketball championship match at the WISH Basketball Stadium, senior officials in the stands and one message for every parent: vaccinate your child. Somalia marked World Polio Day with nationwide events across Somaliland, Puntland, Galmudug, Hirshabelle, South West State and Jubaland, led by the Ministry of Health with UNICEF and the World Health Organization. 'No child should suffer from a disease that can be prevented through vaccination,' Health Minister Ali Haji Adam said. 'Every missed child leaves a gap poliovirus can exploit,' added WHO's Humphrey Karamagi — so the push now goes to remote and mobile communities, door by door.

The upbeat factora whole country, from basketball courts to remote villages, pulling in one direction — no child missed.
