A 'carpet' of crystal finally proves a long-sought quantum material

At the University of Chicago, Shuolong Yang's team grew an even, carpet-like film of bismuth telluride and produced the first conclusive evidence that it is a two-dimensional topological insulator — a material whose edges carry electricity almost without waste while its middle blocks it. Published in ACS Nano, the result ends decades of hunting and points toward far more efficient electronics.

The upbeat factora material physicists chased for decades is real, and it wastes almost no energy at its edges.
