A first volunteer takes a therapy designed to protect the pancreas in type 1 diabetes

Immunocore has dosed the first person with type 1 diabetes in a Phase 1 trial of IMC-S118AI, its first candidate built for an autoimmune disease rather than cancer. The molecule is designed to find the insulin-making beta cells of the pancreas and quietly switch off the immune cells attacking them, helping preserve the body's own insulin production. Preclinical work behind the approach was recently published in Science Advances; the trial will now test safety and early signs of activity in people.

The upbeat factorinstead of replacing insulin forever, researchers are trying to protect the cells that make it.
