A five-day pill course after exposure made COVID gentler for people who caught it anyway
For a household contact who catches COVID despite precautions, a Japanese-developed antiviral appears to soften the blow. In new analyses from the 2,387-person SCORPIO-PEP trial, presented at IDWeek 2026, people who developed breakthrough infections after taking ensitrelvir carried far less virus at its peak than those on placebo, and severe symptoms were roughly half as common — 28.6% versus 53.9% among symptomatic cases. The drug, made by Shionogi, was approved in the US in May 2026 to prevent COVID after exposure in people aged 12 and up.
The upbeat factoreven when prevention is not perfect, the illness itself can be made kinder.
