A forest bigger than Toronto is protected in northern Ontario
South of Kapuskasing, Ontario, stretches a carbon-rich sweep of taiga forest and peatland that stores more than 30 million tonnes of carbon and shelters species at risk, including the red-headed woodpecker and the Canada warbler. Canada has now put C$13 million (about $9 million) through the Natural Heritage Conservation Program toward protecting 81,400 hectares of it, as part of a C$64 million (about $46 million) Nature Conservancy of Canada project with provincial, business, foundation and private partners. It is a concrete step toward the country's 30-by-2030 protection goal — and a home kept intact for everything that lives there.
The upbeat factor81,400 hectares of wild, carbon-storing forest will stay wild.
