A former dumping ground now hosts 64% of Britain's rarest grebes

Woolston Eyes in Cheshire was once a sludge disposal site for the Manchester Ship Canal. Restored into pools and reedbeds by the RSPB and local volunteers, it now holds 35 breeding pairs of black-necked grebes — nearly two-thirds of the UK's entire population. A record year for one of Britain's scarcest birds.

The upbeat factorGiven a chance, nature doesn't just return — it flourishes.
