A giant tuna, long a northern traveller, is confirmed in Victorian waters
Recreational fishers off Lakes Entrance, Victoria, have helped confirm something scientists had only suspected: Pacific bluefin tuna — giants that can approach three metres and swim 8,000 km (about 4,970 miles) across the Pacific as youngsters — occur in southern Australian waters more regularly than records showed. CSIRO testing of the first Victorian catches confirms the species, a small but joyful expansion of the map for one of the ocean's great travellers.
The upbeat factoreven in 2026, the ocean can still surprise the people who know it best.
