A hundred countries meet in Samarkand to put children's well-being on the budget line
Samarkand, Uzbekistan, is hosting the World Summit on Investing in Children's Well-being this week, drawing representatives from more than 100 countries alongside UNICEF, the World Health Organization and the World Bank. Running with it is the Second International Congress on Childhood Cancer. The argument of the summit is in its title: children's health, learning and safety are not charity but investment — the kind whose returns compound for generations. The meeting is expected to close with the Samarkand Declaration, a shared commitment delegates will carry home to their own budgets and ministries.
The upbeat factora room full of nations agreeing, in writing, that children are the highest-yield investment there is.
