A new 200-km sanctuary completes a 400-km safe corridor for Pakistan's blind dolphins

In June 2026, Punjab notified the Punjnad Indus River Dolphin Sanctuary — about 200 km of protected river that connects with Sindh's existing reserve to form a continuous 400-km refuge. The blind Indus dolphin, which navigates by sound alone, has rebounded from just 617 animals in 2001 to around 2,000 today.
