A new antibiotic jams bacteria's protein factory at a spot never hit before

Bacteria build the proteins they need on tiny machines called ribosomes — and every antibiotic we use attacks the same few spots, which germs have learned to dodge. McMaster University's manikomycin blocks the ribosome's exit lane instead, a target no drug has ever used, killing drug-resistant E. coli, Salmonella, and Klebsiella.
