A New Jersey zoo sends $10,900 to Madagascar's lemurs — and the teachers who protect them

Lemurs live only on Madagascar, and they rank among the most endangered mammals on Earth. On Monday, Essex County's Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange, New Jersey handed two grants worth $10,900 in all to the Lemur Conservation Network, a coalition of more than 60 groups working to protect them. The money will pay for conservation classroom materials, support World Lemur Festival events, and fund a six-month training program for teachers near Madagascar's Anja Community Reserve. The zoo opened its own lemur habitat in July — and is now making sure the animals its visitors come to see are also looked after in the wild.

The upbeat factora zoo visit in New Jersey now helps train teachers in Madagascar — the only place on Earth where lemurs live wild.
