A new schizophrenia drug eased symptoms fast — and across the board — in a 363-person trial
Schizophrenia can distort how a person sees reality, and many existing medicines either leave stubborn symptoms behind or bring punishing side effects. In a 363-person trial across 24 centers in China, the experimental drug obuprazine outperformed a placebo on every major measure: it eased both the loud symptoms like delusions and the quieter ones — withdrawal, flattened emotions, fuzzy thinking — that current drugs rarely touch. Improvements showed up as early as day 14, and side effects were no worse than placebo. Presented this weekend at Europe's big neuropsychopharmacology congress, the results are being called one of the strongest schizophrenia datasets in years — a possible new path for a condition with huge unmet need.
