A puffin, a barn owl, a bumblebee and a hedgehog are taking over Britain’s banknotes
The Bank of England named the wildlife coming to its next banknotes: the Atlantic puffin, barn owl, buff-tailed bumblebee and European hedgehog — the first time animals, not people, feature on English notes. Nearly half a million people voted in the bank’s largest-ever public consultation; the bumblebee won outright, and the puffin was added so a marine animal made the cut. The new notes will keep the monarch, and be harder to counterfeit.
The upbeat factorJoy — a nation just collectively voted for hedgehogs: even central banks have a sense of wonder.
