A quantum network learns to check itself without trusting its tools

Researchers at Shandong University built a four-user quantum network — a future, ultra-secure way of sharing information — and verified that its particles were genuinely linked without having to trust the detectors measuring them. The method, published in Physical Review Letters, removes a nagging doubt that has followed quantum communications: how do you know your measuring kit is not fooling you?

The upbeat factortomorrow's most secure networks just gained a lie detector for their own instruments.
