A real bear walked into a library on Winnie-the-Pooh's 100th birthday — and went straight for the honey

The Mammoth Lakes library in California had an early patron on October 14: at about 6:10 in the morning, four hours before opening, a black bear let itself in. Surveillance cameras watched it do what any of us might — head for the snacks. It ate peanut butter, peach cups, cookies and, inevitably, a jar of honey, then browsed the new releases and inspected the reference desk before letting itself out. No books were harmed. The date made it perfect: October 14 was exactly 100 years since Winnie-the-Pooh was published. Library director Josef Bopp responded with a librarian's precision: 'While we love an enthusiastic patron, we do remind patrons — and perhaps more importantly our bears — that snacks are not part of the circulating collection.' The honey jar, staff note, has not been returned.

The upbeat factora hundred years after Pooh, a real bear kept the appointment — politely, hungrily, and without damaging a single book.
