A record £3.5 billion (about $4.6 billion) tender will find the owner who plugs Hornsea 3 into Britain
Britain's energy regulator Ofgem will open its largest-ever offshore transmission tender on 21 October, worth about £3.5 billion (about $4.6 billion): a competition to own and run the cables and converter stations that carry power from Hornsea 3, a 2.9-gigawatt wind farm about 120 kilometres off the Norfolk coast, to homes onshore. Hornsea 3's 197 turbines are already rising, with operation expected in 2027. The tender matters because offshore wind only counts when its electricity reaches the grid — and this is the unglamorous, essential machinery that makes sure it does.
The upbeat factorthe biggest grid-plumbing contest in British history is really about one thing — getting a sea of wind power into people's homes.
