A silent robot found giant chains of ocean plants nobody knew existed
Tiny ocean plants called phytoplankton feed nearly everything in the sea, but nets always tore apart their fragile chains. A gliding robot with a camera photographed them undisturbed in the Mediterranean — chains over a centimeter long, too big for grazers to eat, meaning they may carry carbon to the deep sea instead.
