A single enzyme flips the switch: scientists trace a common hormone disorder to its root
For the one in ten to one in five women living with the hormone and metabolism disorder long called PCOS, treatment has mostly meant managing symptoms. A Fudan University-led team in China, publishing in Nature Metabolism on 16 October, found that one metabolic enzyme acts like a switch that locks ovarian cells into producing too much of certain hormones. Naming that switch gives researchers a concrete target to aim future treatments at, instead of only easing symptoms one by one.
The upbeat factora disorder affecting millions of women finally has a root cause researchers can target.
