A smarter white cane, designed by students in Jordan, points to freer streets

For White Cane Safety Day, Jordan is pairing street-level fixes — tactile paving, clear signs and buses that announce their stops out loud — with fresh invention. At the University of Jordan, five students are building a collapsible smart cane that uses artificial intelligence and satellite positioning to guide people who are blind toward entrances, warn them about hazards and tell them which bus is coming and where it will stop. It is local, practical design aimed at one simple prize: moving through your own city with confidence.

The upbeat factorindependence grows when streets and tools are designed with blind people, not just for them.
