A South African mine is now running on wind wheeled in from Mpumalanga

Tharisa Minerals has started receiving renewable electricity at its mine in South Africa through a trading arrangement called wheeling — clean power generated elsewhere and delivered through the national grid. The first supply, wind energy from Mpumalanga received in September, already covers about 10% of the mine's monthly electricity demand. Under its long-term agreement with trader Etana Energy, that share is set to grow to about 70% of the mine's needs, with solar joining next year — a material step toward Tharisa's target of cutting emissions 30% by 2030.

The upbeat factorheavy industry, lighter footprint — a mine proving the grid itself can carry clean power to where it is needed.
