A van went into the Malibu surf with a dog trapped inside — firefighters carried it out

A white van veered off Highway 1 near Deer Creek Road, north of Malibu, on Saturday morning and ended up among shoreline rocks with waves washing around it. The driver managed to climb out with one of two dogs — but the second dog was still trapped inside the half-submerged wreck as surf kept breaking over it. Ventura County firefighters and California State Parks lifeguards scrambled over the rocks to reach the vehicle, freed the animal, and carried it up the rocky bluff to the highway. Both dogs made it out apparently uninjured, and the driver was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.
