A whole country picked up brooms for the first Nigeria Cleanup Day
Volunteers across Nigeria's states and the Federal Capital Territory turned out for the inaugural Nigeria Cleanup Day on Saturday, organised by the African Cleanup Initiative with the UN Information Centre in Abuja and timed to Nigeria's 66th Independence anniversary. Citizens cleaned streets, communities, schools and markets, sorted and collected waste, planted trees, and joined the Advocacy Walk for Recycling and the Environment (AWARE) in Lagos. ACI president Dr Alexander Akhigbe summed it up: 'The cleanup was the action, but community ownership is the vision.'
The upbeat factora whole country decided the streets, schools and markets belong to everyone — and cleaned them together.
