A women-led ranger team is bringing Darwin's rheas back to Patagonia
In Chile's Patagonia National Park, a women-led team of rangers is slowly bringing Darwin's rheas back to a valley where they had nearly vanished. Once only 11 to 15 of the flightless birds remained in the Chacabuco Valley after a century of ranching and fences. Now, after old fences were torn down and birds raised with months of careful acclimation, rangers are spotting more chicks and more grazing, wandering flocks every year.
The upbeat factorawe — a bird with barely a dozen left in the valley is raising chicks again, because people took down the fences.
